History of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church

St. Paul's is Allentown's first Lutheran chruch which was founded in 1762.   St. Paul's is one of the only two churches that can trace its origins to the beginning of our great city - Allentown.  The congregation played an important roll in the development of the community which continues this present day.  From our Neighborhood Breakfast program prepared by countless volunteers with love every Sunday, the LLLC Soup Kitchen providing meals for those in need and the Street Medicine program providing assistance to access healthcare for those who otherwise would not be able to do on their own.  This is just to name a few.  St. Paul's Lutheran Church is an integral part of the overall mission to assist, support those in need and most importantly give hope where hope is non existent.

The Last Resting Place of Margaret Allen

Margaret Elizabeth Allen was the daughter of James Allen, the founder of Allentown and passed away in 1798 during child birth.  It is said that when she passed, her remains may have been laid to rest under the church flooring or in the church yard at the site of then the original structure of St. Paul's.  It is unclear the exact location, but she laid at peace for over 100 years.  In 1903, the process to erect a new church had begun in order to replace the original building.  As the process was underway, the remains of Margaret Allen were unearthed during the excavation and delicately relocated to  a new location inside the newly built church.  A crypt with a beautifully inscripted marble tablet had been created for the workers in order to place Margaret in what is now the location on the east wall of the clock tower.

May you rest in eternal peace Margaret Elizabeth.

The Church with a Heart in the Heart of the City

We are called by God to be servants of Christ, focusing our ministry in the heart of the City.  As partners in the Church, we share with others faith, love, life and hope in Jesus Christ so that Christ may be acknowledge by all as Savior.  We commit ourselves to spiritual growth through faithful worship and prayer, study of God’s word, and generous giving of our time, talent and treasure.  We believe that St. Paul’s is the “leaven in the lump,” advocating for justice, compassion and the meeting of human needs throughout our congregation, our neighborhood and the world.
